EVER WONDERED HOW COLOR FILM EXISTED DECADES BEFORE TECHNICOLOR?

Original artwork hand-painted and designed by Swofford (that's me). The Man in the Moon's face was painted by hand, then photographed and composited with vintage-style typography and a repeating background pattern to create this Art Deco–inspired dictionary-entry poster. It's not a mass-produced design; it's an original artwork turned into a museum-quality print.

This art print tells the true story of the Thuillier Studio (c. 1897–1912), the Parisian workshop of 220 women who hand-painted movie film frame by frame — most famously coloring Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon (1902):

  • The Man in the Moon face is the film's single most iconic shot: the rocket lodged in his eye socket, exactly as it appears in the 1902 original
  • The red splash across the eye is the "blood" — hand-painted onto the actual film frame by a colorist assigned to that single color, using a brush as fine as one camel hair
  • The faces tiled across the background represent the 220 women of the Thuillier studio itself: uncredited, largely undocumented, and painted over by history.
  • The dictionary-entry format up top gives you the facts at a glance: who ran the studio, how they worked, and what they're famous for

Perfect for: Film history lovers, Old Hollywood enthusiasts, Georges Méliès and A Trip to the Moon fans, anyone interested in the hidden women's labor behind film history, vintage Art Deco collectors, or anyone who watched the Chromatic Chronicle video and thought "I need this on my wall."
